From what I’ve read, decks like face hunter take literally zero skill and ruin the game.Īggresive decks that swarm the board maybe? Nobody hates losing to token druid I think. ![]() So yeah, it was a generalization but at least it was somewhat educatedĪlso, just to be clear, I am not anti-aggro: what I meant by the aggro/combo slot machine meta was that when decks don’t compete for the board it pushes out traditional control, midrange and tempo decks, leaving nothing but aggro and combo which are the most heavily-RNG based deck archetypes of the main 5 and are therefore most interested in consistent unilateral play patterns over dynamic interraction.Ĭouldn’t be a slow deck, clearly EVERYONE hates games that take more then 10 minutes, even more when they lose.Ĭouldn’t be a combo deck, those non-interactive decks are basically cheating since you can’t interact with them.Ĭouldn’t be a face deck. Makes sense to me that players wouldn’t enjoy staring at empty or one-sided boards for entire games, not to mention the frustrating way those games typically end that just feel unfair. Lol sounds like a pretty cool board-based deck, honestly… The decks I’m thinking of do not have those kind of dynamic play patterns, but I also play Wild where the combo decks are especially degenerate - and yes, spell mage is a problem (fun problem, not necessarily win %)Īnyway, I tried to find the source but it’s more than 10 years old, when Wizards of the Coast was reforming their rules and formats for the 2010 core set they did a ton of focus testing around positive experiences in CCGs… Evidence overwhelmingly supported games where players fought for control of the battlefield as the most fun experiences, and all of the metas that almost destroyed the game involved broken combos that shut down board interaction. In some games it’s both of those since it starts off by hitting as much as it can and then ends with the combo. ![]() For instance, my favorite deck type right now is the various rogue builds which use Tenwu + Alex as a finisher. ![]() Lots of people find aggro and combo to be fun.
